Orphan 2009
My review
Orphan is a slow-burning psychological horror that gets more unsettling with every scene. Isabelle Fuhrman is incredible as Esther: polite, clever and wrong in a way you cannot quite put your finger on. Vera Farmiga makes you feel the mother's growing panic when nobody around her wants to believe her. And then there is the twist, one of the best in the genre, so go in knowing as little as possible. Highly recommended.
Orphan: the woman who posed as a child
Orphan is fiction, but a real case broke in the Czech Republic just before it came out. In 2007, police in the town of Kuřim found a boy tied up and locked in a cupboard, which led to a shocking abuse case. Living with the family was "Anička", supposedly a 13-year-old adopted girl. She was in fact Barbora Škrlová, a woman in her thirties. She was placed in a children's home as a child, escaped within days, and was found months later in Norway, posing as a 13-year-old boy called Adam. She was later tried in the Czech Republic together with others in the Kuřim case.
