Civil War 2024
My review
The movie is shot brilliantly: it's horrifying that something like this could soon happen in Europe and around the world. There seems to be a subtle nod to a third Trump presidency that ultimately leads to catastrophe. At the center is a very colorful quartet, where Cailee Spaeny even outshone Kirsten Dunst. In this carnage, I recognized the war between Russia and Ukraine, where line by line, kin are killing kin.
Civil War: the real Lee
The war in Civil War is invented, but its hero, the war photographer Lee, is a nod to a real one. Kirsten Dunst's character shares her first name with Lee Miller, a former Vogue model who became one of the great combat photographers of the Second World War. Miller followed the Allied armies across Europe, photographed the liberation of the Dachau and Buchenwald camps in 1945, and was photographed in Hitler's own bathtub in Munich on the day he died. Like Dunst's Lee, she carried what she saw for the rest of her life, and her story was told in the film Lee in 2023.
