My review
Curry Barker made this with almost no money, and it looks and feels like a much bigger film. A guy gets a strange toy that grants wishes and uses it on the girl he loves, and of course it goes terribly wrong. It starts like a dark romance and turns into something really disturbing, with a few jokes in between that actually land. Inde Navarrette is outstanding. One of the best horror films of the year. Approved.
Obsession: the Dybbuk Box
A cheap novelty that grants a wish and ruins a life is pure folklore, from The Monkey's Paw onwards. Its closest real story is the Dybbuk Box. In 2003 Kevin Mannis put an old wine cabinet up for sale on eBay with a long story: it held an evil spirit, and everyone who owned it suffered nightmares, illness and bad luck. The listing went viral, the box changed hands several times and inspired the film The Possession in 2012. Years later Mannis said the story had been a creative writing project. Proof that a good story can be scarier than any curse.
