Overlord 2018

My review

American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines the night before D-Day, and then the war film turns into a zombie horror in a Nazi lab. The opening jump is tense, the practical effects and gore are great, and the film never takes itself too seriously. Wyatt Russell is excellent as Ford and Pilou Asbæk makes a perfect villain. A hell of a ride from start to finish. Approved.

Overlord: D-Day and the Nazi doctors

The zombies are invented, the rest has roots in history. On the night before D-Day, 6 June 1944, thousands of American paratroopers were dropped behind German lines in Normandy, many far from their targets. In the village of Sainte-Mère-Église, paratrooper John Steele famously got his parachute caught on the church spire and hung there for hours, pretending to be dead. The lab is fiction too, but Nazi doctors really did carry out cruel experiments on prisoners in the camps. After the war, 23 defendants faced the Doctors' Trial at Nuremberg, and seven of them were sentenced to death.
