Hereditary 2018

My review

Hereditary is not a film you watch, it is a film that happens to you. Toni Collette gives one of the greatest performances in horror as a mother coming apart after a death in the family, and Ari Aster builds the dread so slowly that you only notice how tense you are when it is already too late. There is one scene in the first half that I still cannot shake. It is heavy, sad and deeply disturbing rather than full of jump scares, so pick your evening carefully, but it is a modern classic.

Hereditary: King Paimon is older than the film

Ari Aster has said the feelings behind Hereditary are very personal, but that the story and characters are invented. What is real is the demon at its centre. King Paimon appears in the Ars Goetia, part of a 17th-century grimoire called the Lesser Key of Solomon, which lists 72 spirits that a magician could supposedly summon. Paimon is described as a great king who rides a camel, wears a crown and can teach arts, sciences and secrets. The film's symbols and its idea of a demon wanting a male host are built on those old texts, which is part of why it feels so unsettlingly real.
