The Little Things 2021

My review

Two detectives hunt a serial killer in 1990 Los Angeles: Denzel Washington as the tired veteran, Rami Malek as the rising star, and Jared Leto as a very creepy suspect. It is not a fast thriller but a slow and moody one, about how a case can eat a person alive. Denzel is great, Leto is unsettling, and the ending is bleak and not what you expect, which I loved. Approved.

The Little Things: the Night Stalker

John Lee Hancock wrote the script back in 1993, and its killer is invented. But Los Angeles had lived through the real thing a few years before the film's 1990 setting. In 1984 and 1985 Richard Ramirez, the "Night Stalker", broke into homes at night across the city, killing at least 13 people. Residents slept with lights on and windows locked during a summer heatwave. Detectives worked the case for months, but in the end Ramirez was caught by ordinary people: his photo was on every front page, he was recognised in East Los Angeles, and neighbours chased him down and held him until police arrived.
