The Boondock Saints 1999

My review

The Boondock Saints is a loud, stylish and wildly over-the-top cult thriller, and I love it for exactly that. Two Irish brothers in Boston decide to clean up the city's criminals themselves, and Willem Dafoe steals every scene as the eccentric FBI agent chasing them. The film jumps between the crime and the investigation in a way that is great fun to follow. It is violent and not exactly subtle, but it has energy, swagger and a lot of heart, and it is one of those films you will quote with friends afterwards.

Inspired by real events

The Boondock Saints: a bartender's anger

Troy Duffy wrote The Boondock Saints while working as a bartender in Los Angeles, and he based it on things he saw in that life. The moment he talked about most was watching a drug dealer take money from a dead body, and the anger he felt that people like that seemed untouchable. Out of that came the idea of two ordinary men who decide to punish criminals themselves. The script's own story became famous too: Miramax bought it for a fortune in 1997, the deal fell apart, and the documentary Overnight filmed Duffy's rise and fall in real time.
