The Dog Stars 2026
My review
Ridley Scott goes quiet after the end of the world: a man, his dog and a hardened survivalist friend live in the ruins after a pandemic, until a mysterious radio signal makes him leave. It is slow and more about loneliness than action, so it is not for everyone, and the critics were not kind to it. I liked it anyway. The landscapes are beautiful, Jacob Elordi is good, and Josh Brolin is great as Bangley. Approved.
The Dog Stars: when a flu really emptied towns
The film comes from Peter Heller's 2012 novel, about a man living on after a flu has killed almost everyone. Nothing that extreme has happened, but the closest real event is the 1918 influenza pandemic. It infected around a third of the world's population and killed tens of millions of people, more than the First World War that was ending at the same time. In some places, like remote villages in Alaska and Samoa, so many died at once that whole communities were nearly wiped out, and survivors were left alone in the silence, much like Hig and his dog.
