Spiral 2021
My review
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, with Chris Rock, Max Minghella and Samuel L. Jackson. A new killer copies Jigsaw's traps and goes after corrupt cops. It is not a bad film: Chris Rock in a serious role is interesting, and the traps are as gory as you would expect from Saw. The problem is that the mystery is predictable and a lot of it feels like an ordinary cop show with traps added. The ending works but it is not exciting. Fine for a Saw fan on a free evening. Watchable.
Spiral: the Rampart scandal
Jigsaw's traps are pure fiction, but Spiral's real target, corrupt police officers protected by their own department, has a famous real example. In the late 1990s the Rampart scandal hit the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers from an anti-gang unit in the Rampart division were found to have shot and beaten suspects, planted evidence, stolen drugs and lied in court. One officer, Rafael Pérez, caught stealing cocaine from an evidence room, exposed the rest. More than 70 officers were investigated and over 100 convictions were thrown out.
