Brothers: Ma Barker and her boys

A long-lost mother who turns up with one last job for her criminal sons has a famous real counterpart: Kate "Ma" Barker. In the early 1930s her sons ran the Barker-Karpis gang, robbing banks and kidnapping wealthy businessmen for ransom across the American Midwest. In January 1935 Ma and her son Fred were killed in a long gunfight with the FBI at a lake house in Florida. J. Edgar Hoover called her the gang's ruthless brain. Gang member Alvin Karpis later said she was just a mother who went along with her sons, and historians tend to agree with him.
