My review

Retreat is an amazing film, and it gets the Epic seal. A married couple, Kate and Martin, go to a remote island off the British coast to recover after a loss. Then a wounded soldier washes up and tells them a deadly virus is sweeping Europe, and that they must board up the house and let no one in. Is he telling the truth? The whole film is basically three people in one small cottage, and it works because the actors are great: Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and an outstanding Jamie Bell. The tension never drops, from the first scene to the very last. Wow.

Retreat: the island that was closed for 48 years

A remote British island cut off because of a deadly disease sounds like pure fiction, but it really happened. In 1942 British scientists secretly tested anthrax bombs on Gruinard Island, off the north-west coast of Scotland, using sheep tethered on the hillside. The sheep died within days, and the spores soaked so deeply into the soil that the island could not be used again. For almost half a century it was closed, with warning signs telling anyone who landed that the ground was contaminated. It was only cleaned with formaldehyde and seawater in the 1980s and declared safe in 1990.
