My review
Sinister is, for me, one of the scariest films ever made, and it earns the Epic seal. Ethan Hawke plays a true-crime writer who moves his family into a house where something terrible happened and finds a box of Super 8 films in the attic. Watching him watch those films, alone in a dark study with only the projector humming, is pure terror, and the soundtrack makes it worse. It is simple, relentless and genuinely frightening from start to finish. Watch it with the lights off, if you dare.
Sinister: a nightmare and the Villisca axe murders
Writer C. Robert Cargill has said Sinister began with a nightmare he had after watching The Ring: he found a film in his attic that showed a whole family being hanged. The real story it most resembles is the Villisca axe murders. On the night of 9–10 June 1912, in a small town in Iowa, the six members of the Moore family and two young girls staying with them were killed in their beds. The killer was never found. The house still stands, has been turned into a museum, and people pay to spend the night in it. Some say they never make it to morning.
