My review
Directed by Craig R. Baxley and written by Stephen King. A parapsychology professor takes a group of psychics into Rose Red, a huge Seattle mansion where people have been disappearing for decades, and the house starts to wake up. It was made as a three-night TV event and runs about four and a half hours, and that is exactly why it works: the house has time to grow on you slowly, room by room, and it feels bigger on the inside than it should. Nancy Travis leads a good cast with Julian Sands, Kimberly J. Brown and Melanie Lynskey. Some of the effects look dated and the middle could be shorter, but the atmosphere, the characters and the big finish make it a proper haunted house story. This is above Approved. Epic.
Rose Red: the Winchester Mystery House
Stephen King's house that keeps building itself was inspired by a real one. In 1886 Sarah Winchester, the widow of the heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, bought a farmhouse in San Jose, California, and kept builders working on it almost without a break until her death in 1922. The result has around 160 rooms, staircases that lead into the ceiling and doors that open onto walls. Legend says a medium told her the ghosts of everyone killed by Winchester rifles would haunt her unless she never stopped building. Historians think the truth was more ordinary, but the house is now a museum and one of America's most famous "haunted" places.
