My review

Van Helsing is a huge, gothic monster adventure, and I loved every minute of it. Hugh Jackman is the monster hunter sent to Transylvania with a crossbow that fires like a machine gun, Kate Beckinsale is a fearless princess, and together they take on Dracula, his brides, a werewolf and Frankenstein's monster. It is not trying to be scary, it is trying to be big, and it is: castles, storms, masked balls and non-stop action. Some of the effects show their age, but as a blockbuster celebration of the old Universal monsters it is pure fun. Epic in every sense.

Van Helsing: the real Dracula

Count Dracula is fiction, but his name is not. Vlad III, prince of Wallachia (in today's Romania) in the 15th century, was the son of Vlad Dracul, a member of the Order of the Dragon, so he signed himself Dracula: "son of the Dragon". He became infamous as Vlad the Impaler for impaling thousands of enemies and prisoners on stakes, and printed pamphlets spread his cruelty across Europe. When Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in 1897, he borrowed the name and the Transylvanian setting, and Van Helsing, the vampire hunter, comes from the same novel.
