My review
The Conjuring is classic haunted-house horror done perfectly, and it gets the Epic seal. Based on a case file of the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it follows a family in a 1970s farmhouse where the strange things start small and grow into something truly frightening. James Wan knows exactly when to hold the camera still and let you look into the dark corner. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make the Warrens warm and believable, which makes the scares hit even harder. The film that started a whole universe, and still the best of it.
The Conjuring: the Perron family farmhouse
In 1971 Roger and Carolyn Perron moved with their five daughters into an old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island. The family said that over the following years they saw and heard things they could not explain: smells of rot, beds that shook, figures in the night. They blamed the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman, a woman who had lived nearby in the 1800s and who was rumoured to be a witch, although there is no historical evidence that she ever harmed anyone. The paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren visited the house in the early 1970s. The eldest daughter, Andrea Perron, later wrote three books about those years.
